Extra credit

You may receive extra credit by attending an Arabic-related or Middle Eastern-related cultural event outside of class and writing a 300-word analysis of the event (in English) that addresses the following points:

–          What did you learn about Arab or Middle Eastern cultures?

–          How does the cultural content you’ve learned about compare to similar cultural phenomena in the U.S.? (If you are not originally from the U.S., you may compare it to cultural phenomena in your home country.) For example, if you have attended an Arabic music concert, what American musical group do you think is most similar in terms of popularity, style, background, etc? If you don’t think there is one, say so.

–          In your opinion, to what extent is the cultural content you witnessed an example of minority or majority culture in the Middle East? E.g., if you attended a reading of a book translated into English from Arabic, consider: is this a popular novel or an elite one? Who reads it?

You must also list at least one new Arabic word you learned from the event. If the event did not include any Arabic words, you should approach the organizer or speaker afterwards to ask if they could teach you a relevant word.

Events must be pre-approved by Ustadha Standish in order to be eligible for extra credit. If you learn about an event that might qualify, please let me know so that the entire class can have the chance to attend if they wish.
