Upcoming events in June

Arabic students–do you need a little bit of extra credit before the end of the year? Check out these events:

Saturday, June 4: Joint Palestinian-Israeli Popular Struggle: The Face of a Future of Peace and Equality, a free public lecture by Stanford University Professor of Middle East History, Joel Beinin. The event will take place at 7:30PM in lecture room 271 of Cramer Hall on the Portland State University campus in downtown Portland (1721 SW Broadway).  For more information, please contact Jewish Voice for Peace-Portland at 503-888-7455.

Tuesday, June 7th: “Night of a Thousand Stars: A Portrait of Life in Iraq” by Joel Preston Smith, a photojournalist who traveled in central and northern Iraqi for four months in 2003, living with Iraqis and Kurds and patrolling with U.S. soldiers.  This slide show and conversation will offer a glimpse into Iraqi society as seem through Smith’s eyes.  Smith will lead the audience in a conversation about different perceptions of Iraqis and Middle Easterners and the cultural information that can be gleaned through critically analyzing photographs.  The event, sponsored by Oregon Humanities, will take place at 6:30 pm at the Garden Home Community Library, 7475 SW Oleson Rd., Portland.  For more information, contact Heather Waisanen at (503) 245-9932 or by email at

Friday, June 10th: Muslim Educational Trust Forum, ‘’The Theology of the Other in Islam: An American Muslim Perspective”. Speaker: Dr. Yahia Abdul-Rahman, Shari’aa Supervisor and Founder – LARIBA System. 6 :30 – 8:30pm   Portland State University, Cramer Hall, Room 171: 1825 SW Broadway, Portland OR 97201

As always, you can earn extra credit by writing attending these events and writing a reflection in accordance with the extra credit guidelines.
