In partnership with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau for Educational and Cultural Affairs and World Learning, the World Affairs Council of Oregon is recruiting Portland participants for the Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP). IYLEP is a four week youth leadership exchange based in the U.S. for Iraqi and American teenagers ages 15-17. The program aims to develop a network of young adults in Iraq and the United States who have a strong sense of civic responsibility, a commitment to community development, an awareness of current & global issues, strong interpersonal leadership skills, and a willingness to promote mutual understanding, respect and collaboration between the United States and Iraq.

Students will begin their program in Vermont at the SIT Graduate Institute, spend two weeks with host families in Portland’s partner community Louisville, Kentucky, and conclude their program with a civic education week in Washington, DC. Participants will focus on the program themes through site meetings, experiential learning activities, leadership trainings, civic participation at the community level, mentoring by community, business and NGO leaders, and volunteering with local organizations, cultural events and outdoor leadership activities.
